What’s the Reality?
The reality is, estrogen and testosterone deficiency occurring at the same time isn’t uncommon. Estrogen deficiency (also known as hypoestrogenism) is a result of the ovaries not producing enough (or any estrogen). This can be due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), perimenopause, menopause, excessive exercise, an under-functioning pituitary gland, eating disorders that result in marked weight loss, premature ovarian failure, kidney disease and Turner syndrome.
In the case of testosterone deficiency, there are several things that can lead to this condition. If you’ve had an oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries), your pituitary gland may not be able to produce enough to compensate for the lack of hormone normally created by your ovaries. Other issues, such as adrenal insufficiency or hypopituitarism (where your pituitary is not able to function optimally), estrogen therapy (which is unlikely in this case, as you’re already suffering from low estrogen, too) or early menopause can all be contributing factors.
Alternative Treatments for Progesterone Deficiency
Treatment options for both testosterone and estrogen deficiency make it possible for you to become an active participant in your life again. Sure, it’s wonderful to be able to simply think and exist. It loses its luster, though, when everyone else around you are seizing the day. Dietary changes can go a long way towards helping you balance your hormones. This isn’t a cure-all but it can help give your body the tools it needs to heal and start to equalize again. For both testosterone and estrogen, it’s essential to eat plenty of whole foods. This means fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and lots of pure, clean water. For testosterone, consumption of healthy fats such as olive and coconut oil and high-protein meats can help give your body a little boost. As far as estrogen goes, foods rich in phytoestrogens, such as whole soy products like tofu and tempeh can provide you with a little extra help in that arena.
